DHET trustees Stuart Beaty, Steve Barratt and Malcolm Ward were invited to take the DHET stand to the final 2026 airshow at Old Warden, organised by the Shuttleworth Trust. The theme of the show was “Race Day” and it featured classic racing cars and motor bikes, as well as iconic air racers, including Alex Henshaw’s record-breaking Mew Gull, powered by a de Havilland Gipsy Six engine. The visitors to the DHET stand included young and old - all of whom were drawn in by the sight of an original de Havilland Gipsy Major engine, effectively two-thirds of Henshaw’s Gipsy Six. It was interesting to note that the historic racing car and motor bike community face exactly the same challenges as the vintage aircraft world: namely a shortage of skilled engineers, exacerbated by the lack of new entrants to the profession. DHET continues to work with potential training providers, to make it easier for aspiring engineers to obtain training and experience on vintage airframes and engines.
