DHET Chairman Stuart Beaty and DHET Secretary Malcolm Ward were invited to this year’s Cadets’ National Air and Space Camp (NASC), which was held at RAF Syerston in Nottinghamshire. The DHET presence was augmented by DHET Trustee Ben Griffiths, who was in attendance with his day job as an ambassador for 2Excel, and by DHET supporter Tom Keable, who was an early recipient of a DHET flying bursary. Tom completed his flying bursary on the Tiger Moth and is now an RAF pilot. He also flies a Chipmunk in his spare time.
NASC includes an Industry Day, which aims to introduce cadets - aged from 13 to 20 - to potential aerospace careers, both as aircrew and in engineering roles. The Industry Day was held on Thursday 20th August and saw 2,000 cadets supported by over 70 military units and industry partners. DHET’s stand once again proved a popular draw, with a sectioned Gipsy Major engine, as well as a spark plug tester and other de Havilland hardware. Many cadets were given the opportunity to try wire-locking, whilst others were keen to learn how they could forge careers in aviation. Understandably, most were interested in modern technology, of which there was plenty on show at Syerston. However, we hope that we have sown a seed for their future recognition of the importance of heritage aviation skills.
